Canfield Solitaire: what to know before playing

Start Canfield Solitaire by looking at the playing area and its controls. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

Practice with a purpose

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Notice the feedback after each input.

What you are aiming for

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Making selections and moves

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Look at the feedback after the action.

Try this example

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Verify the rule before continuing.

A mistake to avoid

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
