Nim: learn through an example

Choose a round of Nim and settle into its rules. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

A focus for your next round

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Keep the controls in easy reach.

A walkthrough of the rules

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

Follow the example

If only one counter remains in one heap, taking it wins under the normal-play rule used here. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

One detail worth checking

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
